Review
We were keen to try the Bosch AdvancedGrassCut 36. Bosch is one of the names in garden tools in the UK, and the 36V system sounded promising.
The tool feels well built in the hand. The dual-line cutting system gives a neat finish on normal grass, and the semi-automatic line feed means you do not have to bump the head on the ground to release more line. That is a genuine convenience.
The adjustable auxiliary handle is comfortable, and the plant protector bracket is a useful touch when trimming around flower beds without damaging plants.
However, our testing showed some clear limits. With a conventional brushed motor, the Bosch does not match the efficiency of brushless alternatives. The battery drained faster than expected, and the 2.0Ah battery gave us about 30 minutes of real cutting time.
Along a fence line with mixed grass and light weeds, it performed reasonably well. With anything thicker than normal lawn growth, though, the 1.6mm dual line lacked the cutting power of metal blades.
For another test, we used it along a long gravel path edge. Without guide wheels or a proper edging mode, getting a consistently straight edge was difficult. The result depended heavily on a steady hand and was not as clean as tools with guided edging wheels.
The biggest drawback is limited versatility. This is a line trimmer only. There is no brush cutter function, no metal blade option and no real solution for heavy overgrowth. At around £251, you are paying a premium for the Bosch name but getting a tool that essentially does one job.

Review
The Makita DUR189RT is positioned as a professional-grade line trimmer, and the brand carries a strong reputation in the power tool market. It uses Makita automatic torque control, which adjusts the speed between 4,000 and 6,000 RPM depending on the density of the vegetation.
The build quality is excellent, as you would expect from Makita. The brushless motor runs quietly and smoothly, and the display for speed, overload and overheating is useful during work.
The telescopic shaft is a plus, and the reverse rotation function for freeing tangled grass worked well in our test.
Even so, at this price we expected more versatility. The Makita remains a single-purpose line trimmer. There is no brush cutter mode, no metal blade and no dedicated edging system with wheels. You are paying a significant premium for a tool that effectively does one job.
We tested it on an overgrown allotment border with thick grass and nettles. It cut normal grass with ease, but the nylon line needed several passes on thicker nettles. The maximum speed of 6,000 RPM is also clearly lower than many tools in this price range.
In a second test, we used it as a makeshift edger along a patio edge. Without guide wheels or a true 90-degree head rotation, getting a clean edge required a lot of skill and patience. The wire guard helped prevent damage to the patio, but the result was much less precise than with a tool designed for edging.
The 5.0Ah battery lasts well and gave us around 35 to 40 minutes of work. At £479, however, we think the tool should offer more than line trimming alone. For much less money, there are 3-in-1 tools that can do this job and offer additional uses.
